the Governor-General hayin, already fled Treasury from which however nearly all cash had been slready removed. To render tue Shaien a cure against attack in the event of disorder and looting 2 Companies of the 20th. Punjabis were sent to Canton by the night stener. It was als, reported that the ' Provincial Assembly had rescinded the declaration of independence, and had elected as Governor-General the Commander of the 2nd. Division of the Provincial Garrison. This Officer is surnamed So. Little is know of him except that he is a member of Kuo ling Trng. and a friend of Chan Kving-ning. He is not considered by liongkong Chinese whom I have questioned as a fit and proper person to be Governor-Generel,
It is now reported that the President has appointed General Lung Cari-kwong to be Acting Governor-General, but the report lacks confirmacion.
It is questionable whether General Lung has the administrative ability and experience for the post, and it is doubtful whether the Army which retains loyal to the Kuo Ling Tone would accept him as Governor-General. The situation therefore still remains uncertain. though some round has been regained by the cancellation of the fetuous déclaration of independence.
